How very odd il was to read last week that the town of Sal uda for two years tried to keep someone from investing in its downtown! Most small towns in America are hard at work try ing, begging, pleading for investors to help keep their downtowns alive and thriving. Saluda, however, fought in the courts for two years to keep a man from restoring an historic downtown building, which all the while stood an empty shell, an eyesore. Ilie town's stated reason - not enough parking - rings hollow. Parking, while important, is the sort of problem one fixes. It seems the height of folly for a town to chase away its pro spects for growth and develop ment for lack of parking. Shall Main Street be picked up and moved to a parking lot? Tlie state appeals court judges thouglit this too much nonsense and ruled in favor of the devel oper, Dwight Buyce. Let's hope he hasn't lost all taste for Sal uda.
